Canon

He wasn’t there. Phoebe visibly relaxed two seconds after we walked in, but it only made me more furious. I wanted to murder tonight. Watching the alpha who tried to kill Phoebe bleed out in the middle of my restaurant would have made this entire ball tolerable. Instead, he wasn’t there.

Five packs hadn’t made it yet, so that narrowed it down.

The night went smoothly after that. Too smoothly. I was annoyed. I wanted blood. I wanted death.

“Pace yourself, Canon. There are still two more nights and a ball,” Cyrus said after the restaurant had emptied. He clapped me on the back. “You’ll explode if you keep all this tension inside you. We’re shifting and going for a run. Come with us.”

“Phoebe can’t shift. I won’t leave her alone at the hotel,” I said stoically. “And Nico and Knox deserve to run. They’ll be with you tonight.”

“He’ll be here,” Cyrus said with a smile. “He’ll be here, and you’ll get to unleash all that fury that you’ve been holding on to for years. It’ll be interesting to finally see the man beneath the anger—to see if there’s anything left of the man you used to be.”

I turned my head and stared at him. “You’re my king, and I love you, but for the next few days, I’m not sure that I’ll be able to like you.”

“I can live with that.”

After he left, I went straight upstairs. Nico and Knox were sitting outside of Phoebe’s room. Forrest was sitting outside of Kali’s room. I didn’t like sharing my floor. I didn’t like sharing it with an omega. I didn’t like sharing it with the king. I sure as hell didn’t like sharing it with two unstable alphas.

Forrest looked up and met my gaze. I felt his wolf rise to the surface, and I kept my power deep inside of me. After a moment, he lowered his gaze to the floor.

“Alpha Canon,” he managed.

Cyrus was running outside, but he was so wrapped in this alpha that his scent seemed to permeate from every inch of his skin. And when Forrest raised his head, his wolf was under control.

“Alpha Forrest,” I acknowledged him. “Is your omega not running tonight?”

“She doesn’t shift.”

“Ah. Then, we have something in common. If you want to join your pack, Phoebe can stay with Kali.”

“No.”

“No, you don’t trust my omega with yours, or no, you don’t want to join your pack?” I looked at Nico and Knox and jerked my head.

“Go. Run. Enjoy.” I told them. They both stood and left.

“It’s not safe for my wolf to be out. I trust your omega,” he said woodenly.

Settling my back against the wall, I slid down to the floor and replaced Knox and Nico’s vigil outside Phoebe’s door.

“It’s not safe for my wolf to be out either,” I told him. “I was ready to kill a wolf tonight, but he didn’t have the decency to show up.”

“So you have a real hunt. I envy you.”

A real hunt. My wolf howled in agreement but stayed buried because he knew that Forrest was not the enemy.
